Sounds like commonplace. But : Do we know how much hidden potential there actually is? How much dormant talent in our families and neighbourhoods remains unused, how much energy entrapped? Can we recognize the qualities a child may have, when it has not discovered them for itself yet? How much ability is lost due to lack of opportunity ? Do we know ?
Is potential visible ? Is it tangible ? Or is it lost in day-to-day routines ? And if that’s the case, whose loss is it ? Isn’t everyone missing out somehow ?
If adults have a hard time getting the full picture, how can the young ?
Challenge yourself and recall the saddest and then the most glorious moments of your childhood, now consider the chain of circumstances it took to make you see your own strongest qualities.
Benchmarking does by no means suggest to copy others and to mimick their success. No, it prompts to compare, to learn from and about others, to realize what they do and why. Draw your own conclusions! Find a clear definition of a “maximum self”!
It means to look in many directions, to study many disciplines and get to know people from all walks of life. It is a good strategy to a strong identity and a good way to recognize kindred spirits.
The key to the Parental Pal approach is the wonderful Montessori credo “help me to do it myself”.
